Hi there, I've been suffering from prostatitis for a year now. I've recently had a prostate massage which grew a bacteria called Morganella.

My urologist has recommended a six week dose of antibiotic Cotrimoxazole (and says Cipro also effective, but already been on that to no avail).

Is anyone else battling this bacteria or have any advice regarding antibiotics? Any input whatsoever is much appreciated.

My story is as follows... Over the last few months I have undergone a lot of stress. I wrote the law school entrance exam and my girlfriend moved away to another city, so we are doing a long distance relationship. This put me under a tremendous amount of stress. During this whole process I was still working a desk job and when I went home at night I would study for a few hours, so needless to say I was doing a lot of sitting. I would do daily exercises at home. They are quite strenuous. A lot of jogging on the spot, push ups, and floor runs (running back and forth on the floor with your legs). The workout routine I was doing at home is called Insanity (in case anyone knows what this is). Would this strenuous workout routine be the cause of my problems? I have been doing it for a year so how is it possible that this would arise now?

Also I should note that my prostatitis arose because I woke up in the middle of the night a few weeks back with a strange pressure in my penis when I had an erection. I tried to ejaculate that day and it was rather uncomfortable. The more aroused I got the more painful it was. It has since become better and I can now ejaculate. My symptoms are quite mild, some abdominal pain, some strange uncomfortable/heavy feelings in my groin and penis and then lower back pain.

Could my beloved exercise routines be the cause of my prostatitis? Or was it stress?

I am quite a healthy person. Not much sugar in my diet, only a single coffee in the mornings. Drink alcohol occassionally. Any insight would be appreciated becaues I have little faith in antibiotics.

Thanks to the UK's The Guardian, we now have an odd story of a young prison inmate who died following a tale involving difficulty urination, renal failure, hypertension, and more. It's a bit hard to make sense of the odd story, including what is meant by "chronic sub-acute prostatitis."

Hello, I am 27 and having a number of symptoms that I believe are related to prostatitis. However, I am not positive of this diagnosis and am looking for feedback. My symptoms include:

1) discomfort during ejaculation; a slight burning pain. Sometimes I have very little ejaculate. Never any blood.

2) Very occasionally, after ejaculating, my next urination is extremely painful, and the urine, especially towards the end of the stream, is very cloudy. This symptom is what sent me to the doctor. The pain lingers, and I feel a strong urge to urinate though nothing comes out, but the occasional few drops. I usually drink a big glass of water and take a shower and by the time I urinate again, the pain is gone. I have had this symptom once every couple of months for at least 5 years, and only recently was the pain so unbearable that I thought there might be something wrong.

3) Urinary symptoms: hesitancy, reduced stream, split stream, urgency, and frequency. All classic prostate symptoms. I usually have to get up once after about 6 hours of sleep to urinate.

4) general pains: lower back, hips (either, and infrequently) testicular (very infrequently), general 'bloated' feeling not related to gas. Occasional 'tickly' or sometimes slightly painful itch at the tip of the penis.

I went to my doctor with only symptom number 2 at first as it was the only one I noticed. I had been living with the others for so long I came to think they were normal, as they only slowly increased in severity and I never associated them. The doctor indicated that due to correlation with ejaculation I should keep a journal. In keeping the journal and researching prostate issues I realized the range of symptoms I was having. A urine test was clean. The DRE felt normal, according to the Doc, and I did not have any signs of acute infection.

My first treatment was 4 weeks of Cipro. At the end I felt absolutely fantastic. The doctor asked what percentage of 100 I felt, and I said 95%. All urinary symptoms were gone, orgasms felt better than they had in years, and other than the tendon pain I was having in my knees, and the tinnitis, (both Cipro side effects) all of my pain was gone. 3 weeks after the Cipro I started noticing urinary symptoms again. It started while traveling, spending 11 hours sitting in airports / on planes, I noticed the urgency and reduced stream were noticeable. By the time I got back, I knew there was still something wrong. The doctor wanted to send me to the urologist but I can't really afford it right now; we compromised and decided to do 6 weeks of Bactrim (due to the Cipro side effects and the length of my infection, if that's the case).

I'm currently 3 weeks into the Bactrim and feeling worse than I have yet. My stream quality is very poor (although it may very well still be better than what it was when I first went to the doctor; without paying attention to the symptoms before, I can't say just how bad they were). Ejaculation decreases my stream quality considerably further. The pain is not too bad, but I'm feeling intense anxiety and I think the tension in my muscles isn't helping. Hot baths provide mild relief, but not for long.

My question is mostly this: Why did the ciprofloxacin help, but the sulfamethoxazole is not? These are my own conjectures, and I'd love if others would chime in:

1) Cipro is more strongly anti-inflammatory than bactrim, and hence whatever non-bacterial issues I have were better treated by the anti-inflammatory properties of the cipro. (non-bacterial CP)

2) the bactrim is simply not effective on the organisms that are in my prostate, but the cipro was.

I have a slight worry of cancer, as I think all men with prostatitis probably go through, but my symptoms started around age 20-21 (as best as I can remember), and I'm 27 .... prostate cancers in men my age are usually more aggressive so the odds are very against this option, aren't they?

I should say lastly that my wife has a history of yeast infections, and has been treated for a cervical infection once about 5 years ago. I believe I did a short term of general antibiotics at the time. Her recent tests came up clean.

My GP, whom I first saw in early December 2011, initially thought it was a UTI based on a simple urine protein test and prescribed Cephalexin, an antiobiotic. The symptoms appeared to stop within 48 hours, though I did not complete the course of antibiotics, ending it after 72 hours. Symptoms reappeared 2 weeks later. This time I noticed my left eyelid had become swollen and I was experiencing mild constipation This time a second doctor, in Finland where I was visiting, at the end of December, suggested it may be chlamydia. He prescribed another antibiotic, azithormycin, which I took as a single dose in case it was chlamydia. The symptoms were alleviated again, but once again returned within a week. The test for chlamydia ultimately proved negative as did a microscopic examination of the urine and a sample from the tip of my penis for any sign of bacteria. .I am now leaning towards chronic prostatitis as a diagnosis and will see my usual GP for his advice as it has been nearly two months since I first noticed the symptoms.

Two months back, I was suffering from a lower back & hips pain. As it was linked to a tiredness and some anxiety I automatically told my self that it has certainly a visceral origin. When visiting the Urologist, he examined me manually and the prostate touch was painful and the echography showed Acute over a chronic prostatitis. I was put under Bactrim for 8 weeks + Brexin for the inflammation. After I finished the treatment, I still feel occasionally frequent need of urination, tiredness and some time a feeling of uncomfort in my lower back and hips. Also, and since few days, some problems in the erection linked as well to a net decrease in sexual appetite. Knowing that normally I have sexual activities several times a week and have constantly a good appetite in this sense.

I am a bit confused and whether I still have a the acute prostatitis or what I am living now are symptoms related to the chronic ones.

Thanks for your comments and advise.

Hello,

I'm 21 years old, male, studying engineering. I eat very healthy food, do excersise and have no previous history of serious illness. I'm having problems with prostatitis. It all started 2 years ago. I only felt a small pressure around my left testicle. I did a lot of tests and went to a lot of doctors and they found out that I have a very small varicocele and most of them said surgery is not necessary. I did urethral swab 6 times for chlamydia, plasmids etc., I gave urine and semen countless times during these 2 years and had rectal scope. Everything was fine except E. Colli and Enterococcus spp. in my semen. I was taking variety antibiotics for months. After my semen was tested negative for bacteria I was fine for a short period of time but E. Colli returned. I cured it again by taking antibiotics for almost half a year with pauses after every month. Now I have enterococcus spp. again in my semen and I'm very nervous about it. This time the only difference was I had to go to toilet 2 times per night (which I never did before) and that happened for a few nights and stopped (now I'm back to normal without having to wake up). Thats what made me go to doctor to get me tested again. I never felt any symptoms except small pressure around my left testicle that is supposed to be varicocele. I never had fever, pain, weird smell in urine or anything. My semen tests also show low count of white blood cells (one urologist told me that I don't have a real infection according to white blood cells). I'm not even sure what type of prostatitis I have. First they told me its acute now it might be chronic bacterial. Once I was even told its non-bacterial chornic. I suppose I have chornic bacterial prostatitis but I'm not sure . I have an appointment with my urologist next week to see what to do but I'm afraid I'll get prostatitis again after stopping to use antibiotics.

What can I do about this? I read that chronic prostatitis is very hard to treat, is this true and what long term damage can I expect?

Thank you in advance for your time and understanding.

but i can keep thinking on why i had symptom resolution on bladder distention/ uretharl dialation.
