Acute and chronic prostatitis discussion. Arnon Krongrad, MD, moderator.

I've been relatively silent over the past 6 months. I've been officially treating my Chronic bacterial prostatitis with Acupuncture and Chinese herbs. I'm taking a formula specific for the prostate. I have gotten amazing results but i am still not cured. I feel i'm getting closer and closer after each treatment. I am experiencing almost little to no prostate pain and less urinary frequency. I am still dealing with sudden utis and can effectively treat them with the acupuncture/ herbs. Back in may, I decided to return to my primary doctor to get a checkup. I had a psa done along with a urinary culture. Of course my doctor didn't like how I was treating my prostatitis with only acupuncture.  So, about 4 days later i get my tests result back and i was SHOCKED!. Psa came back as a 0.3 (yes a 0.3) and urinary culture was negative. That was probably the best news I had heard in a while. My acupuncturist told me his was probably not that low. So, with little symptoms still lingering i have noticed a couple weeks  ago I had been getting heart palpitations. I had researched some and found cases with this being linked to prostatitis. Can any one shed some light on this? I will mention i do experience frequent anxiety and it may be from that; but i wanted to see if any others experienced this as well.

There is a case of heart problems associated with prostatitis, although not palpitations. A quick search of Pubmed reveals nothing directly relevant. If you find data, please share. Also, if you would be kind enough to share the other cases and/or links to information about them, that would be great. Thank you.

PS: here is a brief review of a randomized study of acupuncture for the symptoms of chronic prostatitis.

I'm not sure Chinese herbs or botanicals can cure you of prostatitis. You need antibiotics under a doctor's prescription. A lot of people think that prostate supplements are effective for prostatitis, but you should read a Super Beta Prostate review. It's meant to protect prostate health in senior men.

This is very late, but I would like to add that I too experienced heart palpitations last year while my prostatitis was actually in slight remission.  My long shot theory behind it is that streptococcus bacteria that was later found in my prostate fluid (multiple times) actually caused the whole problem by somehow releasing toxins.  There are a lot of patients afflicted by strep bacteria that seem to have heart palpitations, OCD like symptoms and anxiety.

Just thought I'd add my 2 cents even though it's a few years later.

Hope you are better now.
