Risk Factors and Causes

In many cases, it's impossible to know why symptoms begin. In others, the causes seem clear. The discussions here will examine factors that mark a higher risk of prostatitis and ask if any of these risk factors actually cause it.

Chronic prostatitis, risk of infection to would-be wife

I have been suffering from prostatitis over the last 1 year. I have been treated with around 2 weeks each of Levofloxacin, Bactrim, and doxycycline with prostrate massages a few times.

My main symptoms have been a general fatigue, a sense of heaviness and inflammation in the penis, testicles, bladder, and prostrate especially after sitting continuously for a long time. On ejaculation, some of the semen does not freely come out. The semen that comes out last is also more viscous. Frequency of urination goes up towards evening after sitting all day due to my desk job. All symptoms of pain are almost 95% better every morning after a good nights sleep and keep getting worse as the day progresses. All symptoms are worse on some days than others.

If the information helps, I had my last sexual event, receiving unprotected oral sex in June 2oo8. I have 4 sexual partners at different times prior to this and have always had protected sex. I had no other health problems or risks to share in this context and no mumps or tuberculosis in childhood.

My problems started in Jan 2o11 with a swelling on the tip of the penis which went away after about 2 days. This was followed by sharp pain in left testicle after about 2 weeks which was diagnosed as epididymitis. About a month or so later, a urologic surgeon did a DRE and declared prostatitis. Despite continuous treatments with various doctors and medicines described above over next 4 to 5 months my symptoms though less intense than earlier, still continue.

My main concern is that I am considering getting married. Can the infection in my prostrate spread to my would be wife through sex. Also, have I lost my fertility for good.

I am a 31 year old male in good health except for the problem discussed here. I have had 4 sex partners in my life including one woman who was widely known amongst my peers as being promiscuous. I must have had vaginal sex about 5 to 6 times always using condoms without any known accidents.  I had my last sexual act, only unprotected oral sex was performed on me in June 2oo8 and no sexual acts thereafter till today. In Jan 2o11,
