If you have been diagnosed with prostatitis, please tell us your story: age, duration of symptoms, treatments, results, and the like.: Hi, I am a 49yr old white male, with no family history of PCa. My maternal grandfather suffered with BPH for many years before he passed away of heart failure at the age of 90. My problems all started around April of 2011 with some hip pain and epididymitis. I have been on several courses of Cipro over the past year. My PSA in March 2010 was 1.22. In March of 2011 it was 1.43. In August 2011 2.13 then in Decemeber of 2011 it was 2.12. I have had right hip and lower back pain, upper inner thigh pain, perineal pain, testicle pain, groin pain and increased urination. Doctor is not worried at all about prostate cancer, DRE indicates prostate is slightly enlarged but smooth and symmetrical...an ultrasound of my bladder in December 2011 indicated that my prostate size is estimated at 38 grams. Of course I am still very worried that I have prostate cancer. I am currently going for PSA tests every 3 months. I take a 400mg advil a day for pain (doesn't do much) and a herbal prostate supplement which has saw palmetto in it. I'll update this further should I get any more info from my doctor.

The risk of prostate cancer reflects many things, including the PSA but also age, race, and family history, which you have not shared with us. So assuming you are 45 y old, white, and without any family history, then with a PSA of 2 ng/ml, 38 cc prostate, and no nodules, the risk of a positive biopsy is approximately 15-20%.

Hello Dr. Krongrad, thank you for the reply, my apologies for leaving out those details. I am 49yrs old, white and there is absolutely no family history of PCa, my maternal grandfather had BPH for several years and passed away at the age of 90 from heart failure.
