Profile Information

If you have been diagnosed with prostatitis, please tell us your story: age, duration of symptoms, treatments, results, and the like.
I first experienced prostatitis at the age of 33. It started as slow urination and progressed to extreme burning and discomfort. That was 29 years ago. The first round was very painful, depressing and frustrating. I was on numerous rounds of sulfa drugs (drug of choice back then), and had prostate massage therapy. After nearly 2 yrs., it subsided to the point where I could live with it, but has flared up numerous times. Now I'm living with a months long flare-up that still isn't as bad as the original round. I went to the Uro last week to discuss it and to see if any progress had been made in this disease. I pretty much discovered exactly the same situation as 30 years ago: Baths, don't eat spicy foods, limit caffeine and alcohol, etc.
Prostate massage is less popular, stronger anti-biotics are out there, and alpha-blockers are used. Rapaflo helps a little. Then there's the whole PSA thing that's been added to the mix. It's frustrating that so little progress has been made. Urology seems to be a discipline with little time or patience for things that defy easy explanation, and can't be easily fixed with drugs or surgery. I guess they're plenty busy with BPH, Cancers, and other problems that respond to medical technology. It isn't the first time I've had to deal with problems like this. I've had tinnitus for years and it's exactly the same story. People with this shouldn't feel alone. I've discovered there's a whole lot of chronic pain out there and many of us suffer in silence. The good thing about getting older is that wisdom and experience tend to take over for anger and frustration.
