Mobile Surgery for Overcoming Geographic and Economic Barriers to Treatment

All patients face two sets of potential barriers to health:

1) identifying the best treatment
2) gaining access to that treatment.

This site has generally looked at treatment choice. Let us also consider the economic, geographic, cultural, and other barriers that patients face as they seek the treatment they have chosen.

In recent months, we have developed a service delivery model based upon the lessons of the house call. This model, housed under Mobile Surgery International, aims to help patients gain access to treatment choice and treatment quality.

Last week we deployed the model to help an uninsured American with a complicated surgical situation gain access to laparoscopic prostatectomy. We sent him from his home state of South Carolina and a surgical team from Miami to Kansas. In so doing we optimized the fit with the right surgical team and cut his cost dramatically. In so doing, we opened access to treatment choice.

Last month, we employed the mobile model to help 3 natives of Trinidad have surgery at home.
